If we have expectations that our husband or wife will fill our need to be loved for the rest of our life, we will soon be disappointed. No other person can fill our heart with the love that we need. God created us to be loved by him.
In Zepheniah (a book in the Old Testament) 3:17 it says: “The Lord your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.”
God loves each and every person very much. He created all humans in his likeness, and he wants to show us how deeply he cares for us. But it is important that we take time to be quiet and listen to him, so that he can fill our hearts with his love. Think about your phone. If you don’t charge it it won’t work. It needs to be connected to the charger in order to be used as a phone. In the same way we need to come to Jesus, read the Bible and listen to what Jesus wants to whisper in our hearts.
One way is to sit down for some time every day and read a verse or a passage in the Bible. The verse above is a good verse to think about for a few minutes. What does this verse mean? How can that be an encouragement for you today. What does this verse tell you about God’s love for you? We can ask God to fill our hearts with love. God is the God of love and he knows exactly what we need.
Then, when we spend time with our spouse our heart is already filled with love. In this way we have something to give, because we have already received a portion of love in our hearts from Jesus. If we come with an empty heart expecting our husband or wife to know exactly how to make us happy or make us feel loved everyday, we will very soon feel disappointed. Allow Jesus to fill you with his love in this way everyday. Only he, Jesus, can fill the deepest longing of our hearts.
